Eating great fare at the Fair!

Ask anyone if they have been to a county or state fair and without a doubt, food is one of the first subjects brought up. True, the Vilas County Fair was canceled along with dozens of other summer events here. However, your favorite fair food is available!

Dream about funnel cakes with a choice of seven different toppings? Ache for a big hot pretzel dripping with cheese sauce? Perhaps a nice hot corn dog is right up your alley.

Now is the time to look at the fair food selections deliciously offered by Vilas County Fair Food. This kitschy food wagon is owned by Greg Holtz of Holtz Concessions.

Holtz said with events canceled all over the country, concession wagons set up and do drive-throughs. Holtz decided because Eagle River was a tourist destination he would set up here for the summer.

The Fair Food wagon has a selection of 13 generously apportioned appetizers, fruit smoothies, frozen cappuccino, fresh-squeezed lemonade, and a selection of sodas and water.

Make any sandwich a combo by adding a drink and a select appetizer for a nominal price. Look for specials on their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/groups/584030892112680/?post_id=949372105578555 and the website, the address is just below.

Greg says the Vilas County Fair has been a favorite of his family for 10 years and they love the Eagle River area. He said Holtz Concessions has three wagons and 12 games.

In mid-March, they are in Florida and then head to Louisiana in mid-May. They are open this year on the Vilas County Fairground from Memorial Day to Labor Day, seven days a week, from 11:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m.

In addition to the food wagon at the fairgrounds, they opened a wagon at Kartway the weekend after July 4 this year. Kartway has always been a part of Holtz’s family visit when they come up for the four-day Vilas County Fair. Kartway is located on Highway 45 North on Pleasure Island Rd.

At Kartway the wagon offers a refreshing selection of icy treats – featuring Hawaiian Shave Ice, root beer floats, smoothies, frozen cappuccino, slushies, fresh-squeezed lemonade, and soft pretzels and nachos.

Hours at Kartway are 10:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m.

The Vilas County Fair Food truck will be on the fairgrounds until Labor day. After that, they will be at the World Championship Derby Center for the “WCDC Fall Motorsports Show and Swap,” Sept. 11-13.

Look for them at other local events this fall including Northwoods Harley Davidson, Arbor Vitae, at the colors ride this fall.

“We want to thank everyone for helping to support the Vilas County Fair. Hopefully, there will be a fair next year and we will see you then,” Holtz said to all of his customers.
