The delicious lure of ice cream

To tempt everyone looking for a chilly, creamy treat, here is part two of our coverage about local ice cream shops. Today we visit St. Germain, Sayner, and Phelps.

St Germain

Cathy’s Ice Cream and Candy Shoppe: 108 State Highway 70E. For more than 34 years, Cathy’s draws in huge crowds that just love their generous portions of ice cream treats. 

The original owner, Cathy Clark, opened the delectable shop which she ran in her offseason as the school secretary for the St. Germain Elementary School.

She was hands-on in the shop until her Realtor husband, Dave, and she retired to a southern climate. Local businessman Mark Hiller amd wife, Leslie, then took over ownership of the shop.

If you haven’t been to Cathy’s, this charming ice cream parlor has a very extensive menu of icy concoctions — 32 flavors of premium ice cream served in different types of cones (including chocolate-dipped!), sundaes, shakes, ice cream cookie sandwiches, and a variety of other irresistible ice cream novelties.

They serve specialty ice creams and cones including gluten-free and dairy-free ices.

Then there is the mouth-watering chocolate candies and fudge. Take a trip down memory lane shopping the huge assortment of candy from decades gone by.

Kiddos will delight in picking out a favorite T-shirt or a stuffed toy. Families love to gather on the airy outside patio and boats on Little St Germain Lake can tie up and stop in for a great treat!

Elmer’s Ice Cream Shop: 5733 State Highway 70E. Located on the east end of Elmer’s Fun Park. This is the former Fudd’s Big Dipper. It is now part of the Elmer’s Fun Park complex. The shop maintains the same hours as the park, which is open seven days a week from 10:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m., weather permitting.

Elmer’s features 32 flavors of Cedarcrest ice cream, and shakes and malts in addition to their ice cream cones. There are gluten-free cones and dairy-free Italian Ices.

For those needing a little more sustenance other than ice cream, select from their menu that includes hot dogs, brats, Italian beef and pulled pork sandwiches. There is also bottled water, soda, and chips. Pick up a souvenir hat or T-shirt while you are there.

Sayner

The Corner Store: 3109 Razorback Rd. Whether you are biking, hiking, or just out for a drive, the Corner Store, North of Sayner on Highway N and Razorback Road, has the perfect pick me up — ice cream!

This tiny store is a wonder of supplies! Not only does it have a great selection of ice cream, But there is also pizza and loads of food selections, camping supplies, sports supplies, bike rentals, fishing gear, and tons more!

The store is open May through September. The current hours are 7:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. Please visit their website or Facebook page for post-Labor Day hours throughout September. Call (715) 542-4250 for more information.

Phelps 

Sweets, Treats, and More: 2268 State Highway 17. Phelps may be off the beaten path, but their customers rave, not only about the food but the wonderful service they receive from the staff! It is two shops in one.

Sweets, Treats, and More is in the front and their food shop, Just Dogs and Other Stuff is around back. Sweets, Treats, and More serves up ice cream cones and other delectable ice cream confections, candy and toys for kids, and their amazing doughnuts on Saturdays and Sundays.

Waffle cones and cups are homemade and sniff for the scent of freshly baking cookies. Be sure to check out their webpage to order their doughnuts online (24 hours in advance of pickup) and place an order online for Just Dogs and Other Stuff for pick up as well. There is an online menu for Just Dogs and Other Stuff and an order form for the doughnuts. You also can call 715-545-3131 to place an order.

Hours for Sweets, Treats and More are Monday-Friday: 11:00 a.m. to 9:03 p.m., Saturday: 8:00 a.m. to 9:03 p.m. and Sunday: 8:00 a.m. to 9:03 p.m.

Just Dogs and Other Stuff hours are Tuesday-Sunday: 11:00 AM to 6:03. They are closed on Mondays.
