Independent living at Sunrise Apartments in St. Germain
If you are considering making a move to the Northwoods for retirement, available living options for your later golden years may be part of moving considerations. The good news is that this area has many options from which to select for optimal lifestyle and health care choices.
Should the time come when living in a home becomes too burdensome or if daily living requires additional support services, there are several types of senior housing from which to choose: retirement communities, independent living housing, assisted living housing and full care nursing homes.
It can be difficult to find out details about the available housing options. The best place to start is at either the Vilas County Commission on Aging or the Oneida County Department on Aging. Each agency offers a comprehensive booklet, the Senior Resource Directory that lists and explains the different types of housing.
Unfortunately, there is very little information provided that describes what each location offers. Information is very limited on the Internet as well. These two guides list basic information on the type of living arrangements offered as well as details on how to contact each facility.
This is also a great resource for information about in-home care, nursing facilities and hospice care.
Types of senior housing
Senior Housing and Independent Living apartments give seniors the freedom from caring for a home while maintaining control of their daily lives and schedules.
These two types of residences offer apartments with no services, but outside services can be arranged to schedule amenities such as meals, cleaning, transportation, laundry, denominational services, and more.
These types of housing do not offer personal and medical care services. What they do provide are excellent social activities and the means by which to live a full, independent life.
Some of these apartment facilities are subsidized housing and there are specific income guidelines to be eligible for residency.
Rhinelander and Minocqua are home to several very lovely subsidized apartment communities for seniors. There are subsidized apartments in Lake Tomahawk.
Another class of housing are the Residential Community Apartment Complexes (RCAC). Again, these are apartments and the residents need some type of support in their daily lives. Many of these residences offer social and recreational activities and provide meals.
Eagle River, Woodruff, Minocqua and Rhinelander all have RCAC residencies from which to select.
Then there are the Community Based Residential Facilities (CBRF). This type of residence provides room and board, supervised support services and limited nursing care if required. There are five or more residents living in a community setting.
Eagle River, Minocqua, Rhinelander, Woodruff, Lac du Flambeau, Lake Tomahawk and Phelps have several CBRF locations.
You may also contact the Vilas Commission on Aging at 715-479-3625 or toll-free at 800-374-1123. For the Oneida Department on Aging call 715-369-6170 or toll-free at 800-379-7499. They will be happy to mail your Senior Resource Guide.
In addition to housing resources, these directories contain loads of eye-opening information about the range of services available to seniors.
Without a doubt, the Northwoods is the ideal place to live during these wonderful retirement years. Not only are there all the resources available to ensure a full and happy life, there are also people who can help you find the perfect life choices.
