Ten miles to the southwest of Presque Isle is the Town of Winchester. If you are looking to live in remote, pristine forested and lake settings, this could be the perfect location for you!
With a population of fewer than 400 residents, this is the definition of small town living. The town does have a community building that houses the library, there is a fire department and several service businesses.
The town is situated on the Turtle Lakes Chain that consists of North Turtle, South Turtle and Rock Lake. The area serves as the headwaters of the Turtle River, which is part of the Flambeau River system. There are also several other lakes within Winchester’s borders that offer excellent fishing and a wide array of water sports.
According to former Town Chairman, Phillip Williams, Winchester was primarily a logging town at its inception and was named Winchester after the owner of the logging mill.
Williams said the logging company left the area about 1920 leaving behind the company homes and the school. Some of the homes were moved out to area lakes and became lake cabins.
The economy turned to tourism and one of the oldest resort lodges, Bux Resort, is still in existence as Log Cabins on the Divide - the divide being between North and South Turtle lakes. John and Ann Wilson are the current owners.
“Bux would transport guests from the railroad stations in Woodruff to the resort by ox-cart,” said Williams.
Today, Winchester is a four- season delight. The more than 60 lakes afford superb opportunities for water sports and with abundant wildlife, this is pristine perfection. Winter sporting abounds with groomed snowmobile trails, cross-country skiing, close access to downhill skiing, ice fishing and more.
