Traveling a short distance north of Land O’Lakes. across the border into Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, the small town of Watersmeet is the first encountered.

This community is a blending of Native American and European American cultures. Watersmeet was made famous in the early 2000s by the high school boys basketball team, the Nimrods.

The basketball team appeared in a series of commercials in 2003 and 2004. Then the community and the basketball team were the focus of an eight-part documentary titled “Nimrod Nation”, on the Sundance Channel, from 2005-2006. It won a Peabody Award in 2007.

The Lac Vieux Desert Reservation was established in 1854, however, the Chippewa had occupied the area since the 17th century. With the arrival of the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis and Omaha Railways in 1884, the first European Americans settled in the area.

The Lac Vieux Desert Resort and Casino is operated by the Lac Vieux Desert Nation and the golf course is part of its operation. Other nearby attractions are Bond Falls and the Paulding Light.
