With warmer temperatures on the horizon this weekend, there are a couple of area events where you can attend for a wonderful winter time!
It seems like the Northwoods Blizzard Blast, scheduled for this Saturday, Feb.18, at the Conover Community Park, has been a long time coming! Of all the winter events in the Northwoods, this one reaches out and invites the public to take part.
There are 16 events scheduled throughout the day. The first one began Wednesday as teams are competing in the Snow Sculpture contest for the $100 grand prize.
Saturday, the day starts at 9:00 a.m. with the Artisan Bazaar. Many of the artisans will be on hand demonstrating their crafts and admission is free. Children love face painting offered from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Then at 10:00 a.m. horse rides will start and last until 4:00 p.m. with costs ranging between $2 and $5.
Then at 10:00 a.m. the competitive games begin that cost nothing or $2 at the most to take part in. Slap shot hockey, ice bowling, pony rides, youth archery demo, snow art fun for kids, and snowboard demo and instruction are scheduled.
At 10:15 a.m., there will be a cross country ski trail tour. From 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. do not forget to watch the snowshoe baseball games. Then at 12:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m., kids compete for a Mushers Metal in the kid’s dogsled dash.
A total crowd-pleaser is the recliner races. Qualifying laps will take place from 10:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. with the race finals starting at 3:00 p.m. and trophy presentation at 4:00 p.m. There is a $100 grand prize for the winners.

Over in Sugar Camp, the 2017 Sugar Camp Snowmobile Club Ice Fishing Derby, takes over the entirety of Sand Lake. This is a spectacle that has to be seen. There are lanes groomed all over the lake creating what looks like a miniature icy town . Fishermen and families fill in their spots, each with their own unique set up.
Pre-registration begins Friday, Feb.17, from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Pitlik’s Sand Beach Resort, which serves as the base of operations on Saturday. Registration and the Derby run from 7:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.
The cost to participate is $20 per person and children under 12 are free of charge. There are hourly prizes awarded for the biggest fish with the Grand Prize awarded at 2:00 p.m.
Beginning at 3:00 p.m., more than $3,000 in cash prizes alone will be awarded to the event participants. In addition, there will be a vast array of prizes awarded that were donated by businesses and individuals from all over Vilas and Oneida counties.
