The 31st Women on Snow weekend
2016 the Women on Snow celebrated 30 years of great weekends!
It wouldn’t be January in the Northwoods if we didn’t mention that this coming weekend is the 31st Women on Snow ride. Once again, the Eagle Waters Resort will serve as home base for the 100+ women who will take part of this all-women event.
For those who are unfamiliar with this ground-breaking group, Women on Snow was founded in 1986 by the Flying Femmes, who wanted to share their joy of sisterhood in snowmobiling. The original women, Sally Ayers and Joyce Roxbury, both of whom are sadly no longer with us, established the Flying Femmes in 1978 when they took a 307-mile snowmobile trip. Dorothy Deer, of Illinois, joined Joyce and Sally in the second year of their female-only ride.
These days, the ride is held the last weekend in January and is a three-day affair beginning on Friday and ending on Sunday. The riding portion is divided into seven riding groups identified by color. There is a short ride for Friday evening. On Saturday, everyone is on the trail by early morning, each going a different direction. Then all the groups meet for lunch then continue on their ride, traveling approximately 100 miles for the day.
That evening the partying continues in earnest with a themed and costumed banquet, followed by an evening of fun.
Sunday morning the color groups head to a brunch destination and then assemble back at the resort for final farewells.
But it is not a farewell for everyone in the group. Monday those who have a hankering for more adventure take part in the Women on Snow Tour. This trip runs Monday through Wednesday who has participated in any Women on Snow weekend may sign up.
All women are invited to join in the fun, but they do place a limit on the number who can attend the weekend and the first to send in their reservations are welcomed. Reservation forms and many more details about Women on Snow are available online in October.
Unfortunately, this year the snow has taken a hiatus. Though the trails are rideable, the roadways are bare. So it seems like this may be a year for Babes on Busses.
No matter the mode of transportation, no one is concerned. It will be a great time for everyone this weekend! Hope all have a magnificent time!
