17th Annual Polar Bear Plunge
Looking for a way to jump start 2017? Head to Three Lakes this Saturday, Jan. 7, from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., for the 17th Annual Polar Bear Plunge, plunging at 1:00 p.m., at Bonnie’s Lakeside. It is a great event with many activities and it is all to benefit “Angel on My Shoulder.”
The Polar Bear Plunge was the brainchild of WRJO’s Mike Wolf, his wife Wendy and George and Lois Ruediger back in 2000. Bonnie Lakeside owners, Bonnie and Ed Lamb, joined in on the successful venture.
Since the inception of the Polar Bear Plunge, “Angel on My Shoulder” has been the inspiration and beneficiary of the money raised at this annual event.
This local, charitable organization was founded by Lolly Rose, wife of Dick Rose, who created Discover Wisconsin. Dick died of cancer in 1995. Lolly wanted to establish a local support organization that would offer emotional support for children whose lives are affected by cancer of a family member.
Currently, the organization supports five separate camps: Camp Angel, for children 5-12; Camp Teen Angel, for teens 13-15; Camp Adventure, a winter camp for teens 16-18; Camp Adventure Extreme, a high energy camp for teens 16-19; and Camp Hozhoni, for families living with a family member with cancer.
The previous 1,666 plungers have raised $422,282. In 2016, the 103 Polar Bear Plungers raised $39,409. Russ, “Moses,” Huizinga garnered the most pledges for a total of $5251.00. Huizinga has participated every year and raised an impressive total of $33,254
To participate in the Plunge, a minimum pledge of $35 is required. Go to WRJO’s website and fill out the pledge and waiver forms. Send in the forms as instructed on the website or bring it to the Polar Bear Plunge registration beginning at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday. This year the Plungers will each receive T-shirts and towels commemorating this year’s dive.
Even if the thought of a chilly dip in the lake is not your cup of tea, it is a super fun time watching as plungers, from Masked Men to Minions, brave the icy waters all in the name of raising money for a great cause. There is plenty of good food, raffles and one heck of a riotous show!
Great News! Recently announced by WRJO’s Programming Director/DJ Mike Wolf, “Just got word from Mark Rose of Discover Media Works and Discover Wisconsin. They will be at the 2017 Polar Bear Plunge.
“This means that you will be able to watch the plunge live inside Bonnie's Lakeside and inside the heated tent as it happens. So if you don't like the cold, no excuses this year to come out and support Angel. They will also be recording the event so you will be able to watch it over and over. We hope to see you January 7th.”
Bonnie’s Lakeside is located on Spirit Lake in Three Lakes on Highway 32. For more information about Bonnie’s, visit their Facebook page or call (715) 546-2929.
