Have a blast while supporting Team USA!
The Olympics are not the only international sports competitive arena. Come to the New Twilight in St. Germain this Saturday, Oct. 22, from noon until 10:00 p.m., and help support Team USA as it travels to Eboli, Italy for the World Pankration Championships this November.
Local martial arts instructor, Dave Sixel, owner of Sixel’s Martial Arts, is the Team USA head coach that will be taking 50 mixed martial arts competitors from across the country as they participate in the oldest form of martial arts.
Pankration is a combination of both wrestling and boxing techniques that date back to its introduction in the Greek Olympics in 648 B.C. This was considered to be a dangerous sport as there were few rules. In addition to both wrestling and boxing techniques, kicking, holds, locks and chokes on the ground were incorporated. The only actions barred were gouging out the opponents eyes, biting and assaulting genitalia.
Today’s Modern Pankration is now known as a milder form of mixed martial arts. Athletes from around the world will meet in Italy where they will compete against the best mixed martial arts athletes in the world.
This is Sixel’s seventh world championship. He will be taking six area athletes with him to Italy. The Saturday fundraiser will help to defray the estimated $3,000 per person cost to participate. Area businesses and groups have helped to raise funds through various events this past summer and fall.
At Saturday’s event, there will be Trig’s Smokehouse brats and hot dogs for sale, in addition to door prizes and a 50/50 raffle. The band “2 Miles South” will be performing live music. This fabulous band rocked this past summer at the Lake Forest Golf Club’s “Deck Parties” in Eagle River.
Come early and stay late to enjoy another beautiful fall afternoon and evening!
