Minocqua Winter Park - a winter sports Mecca

While we wait for the snow to arrive, we want to share information about a great facility that caters to outdoor enthusiasts who prefer to enjoy the snow in non-motorized ways.

Premier cross country skiing is one of the features of Minocqua Winter Park. This facility maintains nearly 50 miles of impeccably groomed trails and is managed by the Lakeland Ski Touring Foundation, a non-profit organization with its roots going back more than 50 years.

Minocqua Winter Park is a town park and is one of the most popular nordic centers in the Midwest. The park depends upon volunteers and many of the trails cross private lands. The trails are professionally groomed using Piston Bully groomers and they welcome nearly 10,000 winter sports enthusiasts a year.

In addition to the fantastic trails, there is a 600’ lift assisted Squirrel Hill Tubing Run and a great ice skating pond that has had some recent updates.

The park opens as conditions allow and the chalet and trails operate from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. daily. They are only closed on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. The Chalet features restrooms, free WiFi, a restaurant, ski shop and ski school.

There is skijoring on the 6 km loop and a new 2 km loop opens this year. This is  open from 9:00 a.m until 5:00 p.m. on Sundays through Fridays and on Saturdays and Holidays when there is light ski traffic.

New this year is Fat Biking on the Wilderness Trails, Sunday 1:00 p.m. until Tuesdays at 5:00 p.m. and daily on the Breaking Free snowshoe trail.

For those who love a thrilling ride down a speedy hill, there is snow tubing available on Squirrel Hill on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the season and daily December 19 - January 3. There are two sessions: session A from 11:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. and session B is 2:00 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. Tubing party availability is offered from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. nightly except for Saturdays. Call for details.

There are ski leagues, classes and programs for children. Resident of Vilas, Oneida, Iron and Price counties are eligible for a free trail pass, a free group lesson, free equipment rental and a free tour of the cross country trail system. This is offered on Sundays from January 10 - March 7 from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Minocqua Winter Park is located at 7543 Squirrel Hill Rd and is about a 15 minute drive from downtown Minocqua off Highway 70 west. Watch for the road sign for the park and turn south off Highway 70.
