Make this Christmas the best ever!
Over the river and through the woods to Rocking W Stables we go - for a good old fashioned horse-drawn sleigh ride. For 15 years, Dean Nolan and his staff have made the Holidays extra special by offering a variety of sleigh rides to suit parties of all sizes.
Sleigh rides at the stables in Eagle River, just north of the Northland Pines school grounds, begin Friday, Dec. 11 and end Monday, January 3. The rides are an hour long and leave every half hour from 10:00 AM until 9:00 PM. There is a perfect sleigh size to accommodate everything from a romantic moonlight ride in the Vis-a-Vis, an early 1900s Victorian sleigh, up to the large sleighs that a party of 25 will enjoy.
And enjoy they do! Dean said that he gets about 90% repeat business each year. "Of course it adds on a little more each year."
There are 10 teams of work horses as well as one single horse for the Vis-a-Vis sleigh. Dean employs former Amish young men and women and fastinating former loggers who have tons of experience with work horses who love to share their stories. The staff numbers approximately 15 people, some of whom have been driving the sleighs for 12 years now. You will find that Dean and his staff are very down to earth, friendly and enjoy mingling with their guests.
"It is great family fun," Dean enthusiastically said. "It has been a very sucessful thing for us. We all get together for 2 1/2 weeks and it's kind of a party for us, I gotta tell ya!"
The ride is something right out of a fairy tale. As the magnificent horses clop along trails winding through the thickly wooded 120+ acres, the bells on their collars ring a steady chorus. Keep your eyes open along the route and more than likely you will see a herd of deer feasting on hay or lying down for a winter’s nap. Watch out for a blizzard of snow that will dump down your back from the snow-laden, hanging pine boughs!
Halfway through the ride, the glow of the huge bonfire appears in the dark. The sleigh halts and everyone gets to warm up with a steamy hot chocolate as the heat of the blaze warms away any wintry chills.
Back at the warming hut, stop in to again enjoy a delightfully warm fire. There are plenty of blankets provided to cuddle under during the ride but feel free to bring your own.
