Winchester Off-Water Homes and Cottages For Sale
Way up in the northwest corner of Vilas County is the Northwoods community of Winchester. This tiny town has a population of less than 400 people that are year ‘round residents, with a summer growing to about 3,000.
Winchester covers 34,000 acres and is 80 percent forested lands with a total of 60 lakes, 29 of which are unnamed. There are 6,000 acres of public land that is a part of the Northern Highland - American Legion State Forest.
Winchester was home to the logging industry when the Turtle Lake Lumber Company was built in 1902 and was named after the president, Walter Winchester. The center of the community consisted of the sawmill, the shingle mill and the general store. A school was built in 1910 to accommodate the 1,500 residents.
After the timber harvesting disappeared, the community launched resort and vacation development. The first resort was built in 1893.
Today Winchester is a four season destination, featuring fabulous snowmobile conditions, cross country skiing and snowshoeing during the winter. In spring and fall, the fishing season is a great draw, especially on the Turtles that consist of three lakes, North and South Turtle Lakes and Rock Lakes. They total 1,052 acres of water and a maximum depth of 58 feet.
