It's so sweet!
Ahhhhh — how sweet it is! Spring is here and to herald its arrival is the 6th Annual Phelps Maple Syrup Fest, Saturday, April 1, from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., at the Phelps school. This day-long event sports many participatory activities such as a free tour of the sugar bushes to see where sap is harvested. You bet you will be able to see how a tree is tapped to extract the sweet sap.
There are games and activities for the children and an arts and crafts show featuring more than 70 vendors.
Don’t miss the taste-tempting maple syrup and honey exhibits. There is even a maple taffy display where taffy is created by twisting frozen maple syrup off a mound of snow. Yum!
There is a maple syrup contest and the best will be judged that day. Enter your own maple delight by going to this webpage for details and a link to download your entry form.
New this year are cooking classes that will instruct participants on how to use honey and maple syrup in cooking. Ever drizzle a tiny bit of syrup over sizzling bacon just before it’s fully cooked? So good!
Classes are $15.00, prepaid and non-refundable, and are offered at 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. Pre-registration is required and the form can be located here.
Beekeeping has become very popular and Beekeeping 101 two-hour classes will be offered at 9:00 a.m. and at 1:00 p.m. Professional beekeeper since 2007, Colin Snook, will be conducting the classes. He will also be offering a second class for those interested. This session will be held in the field onsite of a beehive where students will be able to view an open hive and learn about the honey bee first hand.
The classes are $10 and pre-registration is not required. To save a seat for the class, call the Phelps Chamber of Commerce at 715-545-3800 or sign up the day of the Fest at the information booth.
Want to learn how to make maple syrup on your own? There will be two sets of classes and they are $10. No pre-registration is required.
Lastly, do not forget to pick up your Maple Syrup Fest raffle tickets. There are three prizes: Grand prize: 55″ Samsung 4k SUHD flatscreen tv, 2nd prize: Riviera stand up yoga paddle board and 3rd prize: Husqvarna T435 chainsaw package, with Pro Forest helmet & power box carrying case.
Part of the proceeds from all activity sales will go to fund scholarships for post-high school education for local students throughout the area. For more details and the form to apply for a scholarship, visit this page.
