Getting ready to hit the snowmobile trails!

Hundred of snowmobiles cover Little Lake St.Germain at each annual Radar Run

The Thanksgiving snowfall was a delightful reminder that snowmobile season is just around the season. The trails usually open in mid-December after the counties do inspections of the trail system.

This year there is a new requirement that all snowmobiles have a trail pass. Previously, trail passes were only required for out of state registered snowmobiles. This year, every snowmobile must display a trail pass.

For those who belong to a AWSC snowmobile club, trail passes are only $10. Another rule change expands the snowmobiler registration of $30 from two to three years.

Those coming to Wisconsin from out of state may obtain a pass for $50 with no Wisconsin registration or club membership requirement. They also may choose to register their sled in Wisconsin and not join a club and those trail passes are $30.

The DNR handles the sale of the trail passes and snowmobile registrations with the exception of the $10 trail passes that are administered through the Association of Wisconsin Snowmobile Clubs (AWSC) office. Members receive a membership number that must be used on the trail pass application and DNR registration number.

All trail passes are good for one year and must be applied for annually. For a more detailed explanation to find answers to any questions at the AWSC website.

To register your snowmobile, go to the DNR snowmobile registration page.

To obtain a non-club member trail pass go to the DNR trail pass page

Here are listings of area clubs from which to choose. Visit the AWSC website to see a listing of counties that list the clubs in that area.
