It’s only a few weeks until opening day of the 2015 gun deer hunt season and here is a heads up on a few of the changes the Federal government and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) have made for this year.
This year, regular gun season is Nov. 21 - 29. Muzzle loader season is Nov. 30 - Dec. 9 and the 4-day antlerless hunt is Dec. 9 through Dec. 10.
Additionally, in a Federal court decision handed down on Oct. 13 by Judge Barbara Crabb, Chippewa tribe members are now allowed to hunt at night in roughly the northern third of Wisconsin from Nov. 1, 2015 through Jan. 3, 2016, except during the regular gun hunt Nov. 21 - 29. Here is a link to the Reuter’s Oct. 14 story.
Deer hunters no longer are required to physically register their deer kill at a DNR registration station. Harvested deer may be registered one of three ways:
1. Phone: Dial 1-844-GAME-REG (1-844-426-3734) and follow the prompts to provide harvest information.
2. Online: On a computer or mobile device, go to gamereg.wi.gov and enter your harvest information
3. In Person: Visit a designated in-person registration station that offers a phone or computer to hunters for the purpose of registering your deer or bear.
Also new this year, ANY business can serve as an in-person registration station. Click on this link for more details. Participating registration stations will be listed on the department web site prior to the start of the fall hunting seasons.
There are special rules for registering. To learn more about these rules visit this DNR site.
Online registration has been in effect for some small game since last year and has been expanded for the deer and bear hunts.
In the northern counties tier, only bucks may be harvested during the regular gun hunt season. Only military personnel will be granted bonus anterless tags for the 2015 regular season hunt. Further south, hunting anterless deer is permitted in most farmland areas and there are special registration requirements. The Dec. 10 -14 anterless hunt is statewide. Go to this link for more information.
There are no bonus buck tags for 2015 and all 2014 tags are invalid for this year.
There you have the high points for these major changes. Do review the online information as the DNR has some very specific rules for these new items. We wish all hunters - young and old, males and females, residents and visitors - a bucket-load of luck and a great hunting season experience.
