Tom Martens Biography
Experience is a commodity that is earned. Realtor Tom Martens certainly has the credentials that prove he has the experience to find that perfect home for any taste.
For sixty years Tom has called St. Germain home. His family moved up here from Wauwatosa when he was five. He attended grade school in St. Germain and high school in Eagle River.
After high school he went onto Michigan Technological University, in Houghton, Mich., where he graduated with a degree in math and obtained his teaching certificate. Martens taught math at Lakeland Union High School from 1971 until 2004 when he retired.
Tom and his wife, Karen, have been married 45 years. They met when Karen, who was from Ft. Wayne, Ind., was up north on vacation. The couple have two children, Tom and Stephanie. Both are married and live out of the area. Tom lives in Cambridge, Minn. and has three children, Kaitlyn, Trevor and Isabel. Stephanie lives in Selma, Oregon and has two children, Meghan and Erik.
Tom also has been St. Germain’s Town Clerk since 1971 and still serves in that position. He first began in real estate working for Ray Weber in 1994 for a couple of years. However, the demands of teaching and working for the town cut short the time he had to devote to real estate.
When he retired from teaching in 2004, he returned to working for Ray, mostly working at open houses. When Ray joined Eliason Northwoods Real Estate, Tom also began working here part time. He sells residential properties, both vacation and permanent residences.
Why did he turn to selling real estate?
“Living here so long, I know the area. I like working with people. I just like the area and I like the Northwoods. I am happy when people are happy after buying their home,” Tom said.
These days traveling is limited to an annual trek to Oregon to see his daughter’s family. Tom and Karen love to garden and with managing his job with the town and working for Eliason, there isn’t much time other interests.
Tom says people might be surprised when they learn, “I like flowers,” he laughed. “When we work out in the yard, my wife has a lot of flower gardens.
